A socialist newspaper makes political ideas into something printed, sold, passed on and discussed. Commonweal was associated with the Socialist League and edited by Morris in its early years; his writing crossed lectures, journalism and fiction. The material question is also an organisational one: who can publish, sustain distribution and join the conversation? The newspaper reminds us that a left culture needs places to argue, not only images to agree with.
