Grameen and access to small loans
Credit is a promise with an obligation
The Nobel institution dates Grameen Bank’s establishment to 1983 and describes lending to poor borrowers. Credit can open access to a tool or materials, but a loan also creates an obligation to repay. Set it beside the ration card and cooperative shop: these are different ways of obtaining the means of life, not interchangeable institutions. The award record establishes an institutional history, not a verdict on every borrower’s experience. This entry does not claim that microcredit replaces public provision, guarantees autonomy or constitutes socialist ownership.
