A seedling in the Green Belt Movement
Care that changes the landscape
The Green Belt Movement traces its founding to 1977 under the National Council of Women of Kenya. Tree planting connects environmental care with livelihoods and community organisation. A seedling is useful here because it resists the idea that infrastructure must be concrete or steel: it needs land, water, time and continued attention. The organisation’s own account establishes its aims and origin, not every planting’s survival. No particular tree is catalogued here. Compare the labour of tending with the kitchen’s labour of provision, while keeping their ecological and institutional differences visible.
