The Vienna Method / Isotype

Make the economy readable

Original interpretive vector study. Not a reproduction of the museum object. Original artwork by The Common Room, 2026. CC BY 4.0.

Isotype assembled facts through repeated pictograms so that social and economic relations could be read visually. Reading’s archive preserves the work of Otto and Marie Neurath and their collaborators. For this site, its left relevance is a question of access: can knowledge about the economy belong to the people who live within it? A clear diagram can enable participation; its apparent certainty also makes the choice of categories worth questioning.
