Noken, a knotted carrying bag

The labour inside the net

Original interpretive vector study. Not a reproduction of the museum object. Original artwork by The Common Room, 2026. CC BY 4.0.

UNESCO documents noken as bags knotted or woven from plant fibres in Papua. Carrying is only the visible end of a longer process: gathering, preparing fibre and making a structure that can hold weight. Compare it with the Avoska without treating the two as the same history. A similar net can emerge from different materials, skills and relations to land. Safeguarding the practice requires attention to the makers, not only admiration for an adaptable shape. This record identifies a tradition, not an individual bag, its owner or its age.
