Opened in 1930, Karl-Marx-Hof made working-class housing a visible civic commitment. Its laundry now also houses a museum of Red Vienna. To read a building politically, look beyond its monumental facade to the work it gathers and the services it shares. Washing, childcare and meeting space ask whether a home is a private purchase or part of a common social infrastructure.
