Painted rickshaws of Dhaka

A moving surface, a working body

Original interpretive vector study. Not a reproduction of the museum object. Original artwork by The Common Room, 2026. CC BY 4.0.

UNESCO records both rickshaws and their painting as a living practice in Dhaka. The painted back is an image encountered in motion, attached to someone’s working vehicle. A gallery can easily isolate the picture and lose the labour of driving, building and maintenance. Read the vehicle alongside the Flying Pigeon: mobility includes bodily effort and access to streets, as well as design. The heritage record supports a connection between craft and transport; it does not establish the earnings, political views or working conditions of a particular driver.
