A shop counter can be a place where ownership is reorganised. The Rochdale Pioneers opened a member-owned store in 1844 to obtain reliable, affordable provisions. The Co-operative Heritage Trust preserves the original Toad Lane building. Here the political object is not an unusual product: it is the relationship between shopper, member and owner. Cooperation makes an everyday purchase a question about whose interests a business should serve.
