Sarvodaya Shramadana
A shared task, a question of consent
Sarvodaya’s own history locates its beginning in community development work at Kanatoluwa in 1958. Shramadana makes the giving of labour central to village activity. It offers a comparison with cooperative ownership: contributing hours is different from buying a share. A movement’s account is evidence of how it describes itself, not an independent assessment of all its outcomes. The questions here concern consent, uneven capacity to volunteer and who decides the task. A common project can depend on generosity while still needing a fair way to distribute its burdens.
