SEWA and the organisation of informal work
A workplace without a factory gate
SEWA was founded in 1972 to organise women working outside conventional salaried employment. The cooperative federation describes enterprises formed by union members. This changes the question posed by a factory image: where does work become visible when the workplace is a home, market or street? A membership relationship is not itself proof of equal influence. Read this record beside the Frankfurt kitchen and ask whether saving time is accompanied by a voice over how work is organised. No membership card is reproduced or attributed to an individual here.
