Geometric textile designs
The avant-garde gets dressed
A repeating textile pattern can carry an artistic experiment into ordinary life. Varvara Stepanova and Liubov Popova treated textile design as a way to connect art and production; their geometric designs are documented in the history of VKhUTEMAS and industrial training. The 1924 designs replace a framed picture with a pattern that can continue beyond its edges. Here, geometry becomes something to cut, sew, wear and wash. This entry considers that ambition without assuming that every experimental pattern was produced or reached every household.
