The Trabant 601 entered production in 1964 at VEB Sachsenring in Zwickau. Its recognisable outer panels were made from Duroplast, a composite of phenolic resin and cotton fibre, fitted to a steel structure. Looking closely at the material changes the story: this is neither cardboard nor an entirely plastic car. A modest vehicle becomes a lesson in the relationship between industrial resources, manufacturing choices and everyday mobility. The 601's long production life also makes it an object through which several generations encountered the same shape.
