Milk bars were cheap, subsidised canteens in communist Poland, serving simple dairy and vegetarian dishes to workers, students and families. They made a hot meal part of the urban everyday. The photographed bar in Warsaw, taken in 2009, is a later version: it survived the transition and now serves a mixed public. The object asks what it means for a state to subsidise a meal, who cooked and served it, and whether cheap food is a right or a temporary policy.
