Knowledge & participation
Access to information is part of collective power. But a clear diagram and an open book are beginnings, not guarantees.
For the Voice helps a reader find a poem and turn it into spoken performance. Isotype helps readers see social relations in pictorial form. Cybersyn asks how information might support economic coordination. Each is an interface between a person and a wider system; each makes choices about what can be seen and how someone may act.
A democratic culture needs the means to understand decisions and to contest them. Expertise matters, but it should not become a permanent border between those who know and those who must obey. Making a system legible can support participation only if people also have time, resources and a real route to influence its decisions.
This is why the visual workshop distinguishes a compositional exercise from data. Changing the size of a figure can change an impression without changing any fact. Reading an image critically is part of sharing power over knowledge.
