Solidarity & internationalism
A poster can cross a border. So can a piece of cloth, an argument and a relationship of support.
Internationalism proposes that exploitation and freedom cannot be understood within national borders alone. OSPAAAL’s posters carried support for anti-imperialist movements through a network of print. Their graphic force matters because it made a political connection visible. It also asks for scrutiny: who is speaking, who is being represented, and what complexities disappear in a persuasive image?
Arpilleras travel differently. Women’s stitched accounts made hardship and repression legible outside Chile, supported by networks that cannot be reduced to a single party identity. Their place in this gallery is the shared struggle against domination and the practical work of sustaining one another. Solidarity becomes a relationship to particular people.
To follow solidarity through objects is to ask about routes, translation, money, risk and the right to speak for oneself. A generous intention is a beginning. Listening to the people represented is part of what must follow.
